Daylighting Design for Education Facilities
Natural light and education facilities go hand-in-hand. Numerous studies have shown the benefit that access to daylight can have on student attentiveness and performance, teacher and staff wellbeing, and energy savings.
Daylighting designed to inspire.
Schools + Students Benefit From Natural Light
Natural light can have a large impact on student performance. A study done by Heschong Mahone Group, “Daylighting in Schools” (2002), evaluated daylighting and human performance in three separate school districts in differing climates, with different building designs, teaching styles, and curricula. The study indicated that “most teachers felt that windows and daylight[ing] improved the mood of their students, keeping them calm and improving their attention spans. Higher illumination levels in daylit classrooms simply help keep children more alert and capable of absorbing new information.”
Well-designed daylighting has long been shown to have significant economic payoffs such as reduced demand for electricity, but it’s important to remember that natural light can boost student health and general mood, illicit better behavior, and increase focus.
Students with the most daylighting in their classrooms also progressed 20% faster on math tests and 26% faster on reading tests in one year than those with the least amount of daylighting. Students with well-designed skylights in their classrooms - ones that diffuse the daylight - also improved 19-20% faster than those without a skylight (according to Daylighting in Schools, Condensed Report, Heschong Mahone Group).
Education Facilities and Daylighting Design
Entrances that Make a Statement
Welcome students and teachers and protect them from the elements with a bright and welcoming outdoor canopy or “pass-through” skylight that draws people into the facility. They can be a great way to protect students in drop-off areas and call out main entrances.
Canopies are also great ways to utilize outdoor spaces as multi-functional learning areas (in good climates or warmer times of the year), expanding a school's footprint while conserving costs, and bringing students closer to nature.

Inspired Learning Areas
Comfortable + Inviting Classrooms
Natural light has been shown to improve student focus and test scores, and Kingspan Light + Air offers a wide variety of systems that allow for numerous design options plus light control and ventilation. Mixing glass and translucent glazing can offer views to the outdoors and occupant control of ventilation while retaining thermal performance and light control.

Creative Spaces
Creating Common Areas Where Students Want to Gather
Cafeterias and common areas are more welcoming when enhanced with natural light—and the cost savings can be tremendous when compared with having to light these spaces solely with artificial lighting, especially since they’re at their busiest during peak energy use hours.
Largescale translucent skylights can also be a great way to bridge the old and new when expanding or retrofitting, creating common areas between buildings that can be used as multipurpose space.

Unique Looks + School Colors
Translucent daylighting systems are a beneficial and versatile design tool. They offer a wide range of options, including insulation, glazing colors, thermal breaks, STC rated systems, hurricane and blast protection, mixed glazed and unitized options, backlighting and applied graphic opportunities and much more.
