Roper Mountain Science Center
Assisting in the education of future generations.
This remarkable facility, highlighted by a large KlearSky™ metal framed glass skylight, embraces students and welcomes the public, providing an immersive and uplifting educational journey complemented by the presence of dedicated scientists.
Project Background
Roper Mountain Science Center (RMSC), located in Greenville, SC, is a cutting-edge Environmental Science and Sustainability Center that serves as a vibrant education hub. Dedicated to fostering immersive laboratory experiences for 50,000 students a year, the new building will better meet the needs of students.
This remarkable facility, designed by SKOLNICK in collaboration with Craig Gaulden Davis, replaces an abandoned amphitheater that had occupied the land for two decades. With a commitment to equipping future generations with the knowledge and skills necessary to face the challenges and uncertainties of the future, this transformative space boasts an array of exceptional features. These include STEAM-based student labs, an indoor waterfall that educates visitors about the local water systems, an engaging sustainable future gallery, and a cafeteria where students with disabilities can train to enter the work force.
Leading the Way
A facility to teach and demonstrate sustainability.
The design team, in selecting a daylighting solution that not only fulfilled their immediate goals but also demonstrated long term durability, emphasized their commitment to creating a sustainable and enduring environment.

Growth through Education
In the pursuit of creating an environment that encapsulates the very essence of their core concept, which proclaims that “together, we can build a sustainable future for our interconnected and dynamic world,” attention was given to integrating sustainability into every facet of the design process.
From the reception counter made of recycled glass to the inclusion of rooftop solar photovoltaic panels, each aspect was carefully crafted to not only mitigate environmental impact, but also actively foster a culture of eco-conscious practices and promote sustainability.
The RMSC also faced the challenge of creating a naturally illuminated environment for not only the 45 school districts across South Carolina that would be visiting, but also the comfort and productivity of its own dedicated work force.
One daylighting strategy the team chose to infuse a main learning and area with natural light, while simultaneously minimizing energy consumption and associated costs, was the implementation of a large single slope KlearSky™ metal framed glass skylight. This strategic choice served a dual purpose: not only did it effectively harness the power of daylight for one of the main exhibit areas, but it also aligned seamlessly with the overarching sustainability objectives of the project - helping to reinforce a connection with nature by providing unfettered views of the sky.
