Indianapolis Zoo Bicentennial Pavilion
Canopy creates event space that's protected from the elements
Unique canopy design provides a covered event space while also reflecting the zoo's emphasis on sustainability.
Project Background
When the Indianapolis Zoo was given a $10 million grant, the one condition for using it was that it needed to implement an initiative that benefits the community’s goal of long-term sustainability.
The result? The zoo’s Bicentennial Pavilion, which hosts a wide range of events and is protected from features U-Lite™ canopy systems. Modeled after a lush rain forest, and crafted primarily from natural materials, the space houses 11 “pods” for up to 1,000 seated attendees and is the perfect environment for the Macaws presentation it currently hosts.
Glazing with a Purpose
Functionality Meets Design
The canopies allow for 100% collection of rainwater, which percolates into an aquifer as opposed to being discharged to city sewers, achieving the sustainability goals and requirements for the project.
And with clear and translucent glazing options, you can design a look that's unique and practical. Clear polycarbonate glazing has a similar look to glass, providing views of the sky, but is significantly lighter, allowing for more design flexibility.

Beautiful and Unique
According to RATIO Architects, "The Bicentennial Pavilion was purposely designed as an awe-inspiring, other-worldly introduction to the zoo campus, intended to spike curiosity and wonder, preparing visitors for a deeply meaningful and educational experience."
The U-Lite™ canopies used in the pavilion are a perfect blend of form and function, providing protection from the elements and sun control while still providing glimpses of the sky.
