The city of Surrey wanted to create an aquatic facility that would be a vital part of the community, acting as a training center as well as a location for regional, national and international competitions.
The facility was also designed to house a 10-lane, 50m Olympic size competition pool and dive platform, along with seating for up to 900 people.
An integral part of the Grandview Heights Aquatic Centre is natural light, provided by a large translucent façade that helps to minimize glare for the athletes to focus on their training, while also following the wave-like form of the room, which, when it opened, was the longest span timber catenary roof built of its time.
